Accountancy firm, Page Kirk, tired of using spreadsheets and outdated processes to manage their people, needed a solution that could not only help them with the day-to-day aspects of HR, but one that could help them take a more progressive approach to managing their people.

With a focus on personalisation, recruitment, and importantly their people, Page Kirk realised that they needed a HR system with a difference. Cue People First.

Signing up as an early adopter, Page Kirk not only had access to HR fundamentals like visual organisation charts, working patterns, benefits management, leave processing, performance management and pragmatic people analytics, they knew that they could also make the most of the latest technology and thinking behind the product.

A social system

People First enables all employees to share news and successes within the system, enhancing social interactions and general communications within the firm. Groups and company news have been set up to make the People First home page more interactive for users, and an engaging experience all round.

Attracting top talent

Recruitment processes and information are now easily accessible, with all information in People First centralised, allowing for successful recruitment campaigns that help Page Kirk attract the best talent. The company are particularly delighted with People First’s social media apps, which they have used as part of their graduate recruitment campaigns.

Data at their fingertips

People First has opened up access to people’s data (including vehicle data), removing spreadsheets and paper records and placing more ownership of employees’ data on the employees themselves.

Improved performance management

Page Kirk are taking advantage of People First’s check-in facility, which helps managers and employees develop better relations, and in turn increases employee engagement levels. The system asks for talking points, prepares and runs the meeting, helps make new tasks on the fly, and then checks both parties are satisfied with the outcomes.

Future focus

Many other People First benefits have been realised by Page Kirk, including storage of CPD records and integration with payroll. However, these are just the tip of the iceberg. Future plans include the ability to book learning courses and protect their investment should an employee leave, and API integration with Sage payroll. Beyond that, People First is Page Kirk’s oyster, with digital personal assistants available to all employees, pragmatic people analytics and job crafting to keep their people in the flow – all of which are a fundamental part of the People First system.

When Emberson, a group of marketing and sales support agencies, formed in 2010, they were clear on two fundamental principles.

  1. They wanted to work with like-minded people who wanted to truly collaborate with each other and their marketing agency, and;
  2. They wanted to make a difference to their employees, customers, supply partners and communities, by putting people first.

Emberson is a virtual company, meaning they have no physical location. For them, their cloud software alone is their ‘place.’

Truly virtual

A virtual company is very different to a physical company and requires a different culture to function – in their case, an ‘open virtual company culture,’ which is very different to many of their competitors, which operate a ‘closed factory culture’.

They currently employ a full-time team of 12 and utilise the specialist services of 50 based in 12 countries. They are a trans-Atlantic business with revenue split between clients in the US, Europe, Middle East and UK. They are nimble – able to grow quickly – not limited by local talent pools or the location of customers.

Being virtual delivers tangible cost savings, reduces individual and collective environmental impact, and reclaims valuable time. Being virtual adds up to improved productivity from fitter, healthier, more motivated and engaged people with more time to achieve a better life-work balance.

A need for aligned HR technology

Technology and the cloud are key enablers for Emberson, and they already had many of the bases covered. However, they recognised that there was a growing need to add cutting-edge HR functionality into the mix.

They chose People First to be their partner in this. As they challenge the ‘closed agency culture,’ the People First open people platform will help them to transform the way HR is experienced by their people – becoming one of their key differentiators.

Why People First?

There was a meeting of minds from day one – both organisations have similar values.

With People First, Emberson will be able to transform the HR experience, making it intuitive, mobile and simple, while the People First ‘personal assistant’ helps them to reduce the burden of administration wherever it occurs.

The platform provides tools to create an HR culture that is continuous and embedded in every individual, from performance and goals to regular check-ins.

The openness of the platform means that the solution will grow as Emberson grows, and above all, it will enable them to have fun and enjoy their work!
