Well-being Through Well-doing

Well-doing; the ‘doing bit’ of well-being!

Ask yourself; how much time are you spending with your people (on an individual level) understanding what activities they are doing outside of the working environment?

  • Park run is unlikely to feature as part of your organisation's well-being strategy. However, over 250,000 people are taking part in this activity every weekend.
  • Mindfulness apps like Calm & Headspace are also unlikely to feature in most organisations well-being strategy for 2019. Yet 20 million people are now using Headspace since it first launched in 2012.
  • Wearable tech i.e Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch are less likely to appear in most organisations well-being strategy this year. However, one in five people in the UK owns a device and one in ten track their activities such as; steps, calories, heart rate and sleep.

The fact is: your people know more and better than you as the organisation when it comes to their individual well-being. The truth is, they’re taking care of their well-being through their well-doing already.

Even those people who aren’t doing any activity (physical or mental), when approached in the right way will share this with you. They’ll share with you the type of activities they’d love to do, would be happy to have a go at or would rule out completely.

Limited impact

The provision of free fruit, discounted gym membership and flexible working aren’t having the desired impact or providing the response from your people that your organisation was expecting.

If you’ve only just adopted some of these ‘transactional’ benefits as part of your well-being strategy then don’t lose hope; you’re still ahead of many organisations!

Through a combination of my own research (over the last 3 years) and recent articles from a variety of sources (including People Management, CBI, Mind, HR Magazine) there is no ‘quick fix’ when it comes to developing and introducing a well-being strategy into your organisations.

However, well-being isn’t just the responsibility of you, the organisation.

It’s far bigger than that and individuals have to start to take more responsibility too.

Enhance well-being through well-doing in 2019 and beyond;

Step 1: Make it personal, not organisational

  • Empower your managers with the tools (and train them if necessary) to enable them to have purposeful well-being conversations with each member of their teams.
  • Make these conversations daily; not through a one to one or traditional appraisal.

Step 2: Tell everyone what you’re doing

  • Communicate out to the business that the best way to improve and enhance overall well-being is to make it personal.
  • Lead the way and go their first as a leadership & HR / People team.
  • Create well-being champions across the business and across each level so that it’s inclusive and not exclusive to certain roles or people.

Step 3: Have a conversation

  • Find out first of all what your managers are (and not) doing.
  • Then find out through your managers;
    • What each team member is doing currently which contributes to positive well-being.
    • What each team member is not doing currently which would contribute to positive well-being.

It’s really important to include: physical and mental activities, apps, mindfulness, meditation, volunteering. Move away from just the physical side of well-being as this switches some people off.

Step 4: Report on it

  • Report on it like you would your other monthly activity. It’s important so it gets measured.
  • Create a visual representation of what your organisation's well-being landscape looks like and report on it monthly as a minimum, weekly to begin with (if need be).
  • Task each area or department to track and report well-being activities across the month.

Step 5: Recognise

  • Recognise the good examples of well-being taking place in your organisation.
  • Recognise the areas and people who have improved their well-being.
  • Challenge your organisations to be recognised across their industry (initially) then across the nation as being the healthiest place to work.

Remember this:

Successful organisations of tomorrow will be the ones who show an interest in their people today (and every day). Those who create and foster a culture and environment that puts positive well-being over everything else will be the organisation’s that people want to be part of.
