Meet the Teams Behind the Tech

At People First, we didn’t want to design yet another run-of-the-mill HR platform – the market is already saturated with products that offer ‘more of the same.’

Instead, we wanted to create a platform that offered technological solutions to the issues faced by businesses as they transition to the future of work, creating a more engaged, productive, and collaborative workplace in the process.

To do this, we have assembled a talented group of engineers, architects, and developers who are all passionate about creating a better workplace. These are the people responsible for turning big ideas into practical features.

Let’s meet the people behind the tech.

This is the specialist team behind People First’s new time and attendance (T&A) functionality, which allows employees to clock in and out in real time using their smartphones.

While this process couldn’t be simpler for the user, there’s more to this functionality than meets the eye:

“Although the concepts are simple on the surface, there are so many scenarios and intricacies to be considered that require detailed thought and logical thinking.

“Still, growing T&A from the ground up into its own branch of functionality within People First has been hugely rewarding. Hopefully, implementing T&A will take us into a new market area not explored previously.”

In addition to designing and building People First’s admin portal, this is the team behind the People First Digital Assistant and Talksuite, a platform that allows customers to create and deploy their very own chatbots.

Digital assistants are very much a core feature of People First, and are central to our goal of removing the barriers and noise that hamper productive work. So aside from designing game-changing product features, what does team Helix enjoy most about working at People First?

“The team is great fun, talented, and we all learn off each other. We build a solid consensus and rally around to help both each other and external team members, which really creates a great workplace ethos.”

These are the guys responsible for People First’s social feed, which allows all employees to share information, give and receive recognition, and connect with like-minded colleagues across teams and locations.

The social feed is the first page that users see when they open People First, so our team were set the challenge of making a great first impression – and they are very proud of the results.

“The social feed is the homepage, and it’s such a cool and engaging page. I’ve never seen another HR application like it. We love the weekly digest, too. It’s not your typical email newsletter; it’s a useful, handcrafted mail specifically for your company, containing topics that the user wants to read about.”

This eight-strong team is responsible for the Custom Tools element of People First, which allows system administrators to expand on the People First eco-system by creating their very own personalised areas and cards.

The team also handles People First’s recruitment functionality, allowing our customers to roll out internal and external recruitment campaigns with ease.

So what makes life at People First enjoyable for them?

“We have a great team who make it fun to work alongside. Everyone is very supportive and knowledgeable. We have a huge amount of team experience that can quickly identify and solve issues – some of us have been working on the project from the very beginning!”

Taking care of on the human resource management (HRM) aspect of People First, this team cover personal and job information, organisation charts, departmental trends, and data imports and exports.

As HRM is one of the largest and most complicated parts of the system, this work comes with its own unique challenges, but the team enjoy working on such an exciting project:

“People first is a great piece of software to work on. All of the code is built really well, with great architecture and coding standards. Most of us have worked on software in the past that doesn’t have any of this, and the difference cannot be understated.”

This team look after talent management within People First, which comprises multiple parts of the system, including check-ins, match & gap, projects & goals, succession, personal tasks and flow.

The team have built People First’s talent management functionality brick by brick, and they love watching the project grow.

“Originally, when talent started, there wasn’t much to the system besides check-ins and goals. Being able to see an area expand so much and provide so much value to the system is an enjoyable accomplishment itself. We’ve been able to identify areas of improvement and implement them, and being able to see these changes gradually go into the system is amazing.”

This photo consists of two teams, the first responsible for software architecture. This involves helping the different areas of People First work together as a whole and covers aspects of the software that are regarded as ‘non-functional’, such as performance, extensibility, and scalability.

Their work so far has involved implementing domain-driven design (DDD), creating a platform for People First’s social feed to perform smoothly and work on payroll integration.

Despite the challenges involved, the team are enjoying building something from the ground up:

“People First is a green-field project, and we get to work on the it from the outset and see it evolve. What’s more, we get to work with an incredibly intelligent group of individuals, all bringing slightly different perspectives to solve difficult problems.”

Working closely with the architects is the team responsible for code governance at People First. Their upcoming work involves campaigning to keep People First on the latest technical platforms (Java, .NET and Angular) and lobbying for the use of more native technologies on mobile.

The team often specialise on different technologies, however, we all work on the same project and get to all agree on the bigger-picture aspect of working for People First:

“People First is trying to do something positive for world of work – and it’s great to be a part of that.”

This two-man team are responsible for improving the quality and speed of technical processes. This involves researching existing, new and upcoming technologies that can be used in People First to embed quality and assurance, and developing the tools and frameworks to automate data management, performance testing, API testing, UI testing, bot testing, and test environment maintenance.

What do they enjoy most about their jobs at People First?

“The ability to work on the latest cutting-edge technology, which People First is built upon. We also have an incredibly knowledgeable team, who are always happy to share their experience and expertise.”

Another two-man team, these guys handle the requirements, design, development, and deployment of our iOS and Android mobile apps for People First and the Talksuite chatbot.

According to the guys, being such a small team brings its own unique challenges and benefits:

“Being the only two mobile developers, we only have each other to discuss solutions to problems we come up against. This means we have to think deeply about solutions and how they fit on both platforms.

“On the other hand, being a small team makes us more agile, meaning we can act fast and make changes more quickly.”

What other challenges does the team face? “The eternal debate between ourselves on which platform is better – iOS or Android?”

This six-strong team handle notifications management, allowing users to receive emails and in-app notifications, and payroll integration – one of the most important aspects of any HR platform, and a responsibility that isn’t lost on the team.

“Getting paid is the main reason people go to work. As our main focus is payroll, we need to ensure the area is fully tested and reliable.”

In addition to interesting projects, this team enjoys the opportunity to work for a truly people-focused company:

“The great thing about working at People First is that it really is about the people. We get to work with the latest tech, and the business is always investing in its employees either through training or other benefits. The team are why we enjoy working here, as they are a great bunch of talented people.”
